Philip A. Hyssong
Philip A. Hyssong is CEO/Owner of Alternative Communication Services and continues to use his 30 plus years of management experience at ACS and its affiliates. Prior to launching ACS, Phil was Executive Director of a media company specializing in Christian media that focused on the needs of people who were Deaf or hard-of-hearing. Further, he held the position of Vice President at another CART and captioning company for over 6 years. He holds an undergraduate degree in Education from Concordia University Chicago, a master's degree in Instructional Design from Northern Illinois University, earned his certification as a Manager of Reporting Services through the National Court Reporters Association, and successfully completed the TypeWell training program. He recently served on the FCC Disability Advisory Committee, in addition to his volunteer work with Peoples Resource Center of DuPage County and the local high schools Incubator business class. Under his leadership, ACS has grown in 10 years from a startup company to a family of companies with revenues nearing $10 million annually.

T.J. DiGrazia
T.J. DiGrazia, Chief Operating Officer for Alternative Communication Services, has over five years; experience in the CART/Captioning industry. Prior to working at ACS, T.J. worked for Fortune 5 financial institution as a Credit Analyst. He holds a BA and MBA from National-Louis University. He is on the front line overseeing operations the entire family of companies, including ACS, EduCAPTION, Closed Caption Productions, PostCAP and Home Team Captions. He oversees all operational staff and is still involved in training new clients on how to use the services provided by our companies. He was instrumental in coordinating an interface between our Scheduling Application Management program (SAM) and our internet-based text service, StreamText. T.J. brings a unique combination of authority, knowledge and warmth to the overall operation.

Carmin Beardsley
Carmin Beardsley,is Operations Manager for Alternative Communication Services brings over 15 years’ experience in disability services and office management. Having a son with low vision, Carmin was inspired to pursue a career dedicated to advocacy and accessibility. She graduated from the TypeWell Training Program in 2003, and holds a degree in both American Sign Language Interpretation and Deaf Studies. Bringing this passion and skill set to The Caption Family, Carmin overseas operational staff on a daily basis while being a resource for clients, writers and interpreters. A born-and-raised Oregonian, Carmin now calls Georgia home, enjoys exploring new parts of the country and really doesn't like sweet tea!

Jack Nunn
Jack Nunn, Prior to joining Alternative Communication Services in 2013. He currently serves as the Convention/News Coordinator. Prior to joining ACS, Jack worked in IT support at both Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation and Hunter College. He holds a BA in Urban Studies from Hunter College and currently lives in Idaho. Jack has expertise in all facets of CART and broadcast captioning support, as well as convention coordination. He understands the diverse needs of clients and is dedicated to creating tailored solutions to meet your needs. In his free time, he likes to go hiking and skiing.

Brook Nunn
Brook Nunn,CRC is a highly skilled realtime CART captioner for Alternative Communication Services. She graduated with a degree in closed captioning from Stark State College of Technology. Since 2009, Brook has provided remote and onsite CART and broadcast captioning services for many government agencies, universities, conferences, business meetings, and special events across the United States. Brook loves to travel, and has been to 25 countries. She currently lives in Idaho, where she enjoys hiking, skiing, and kayaking.

Julie Stone
Julie Stone,Chief Financial Officer, first worked with Alternative Communication Services as a Typewell transcriber, developing a deep appreciation for the impact communication access can have on those with hearing loss. She is passionate about helping entrepreneurs grow their business through a careful combination of hard work, resourcefulness, and enthusiasm. Prior to joining ACS, Julie served as a controller and consultant to several small businesses, bringing with her over a decade of accounting skills. She earned a degree in Business from the University of the Pacific, and now the California native calls Richmond, Virginia home. In addition to serving as a board member for the Institute of Management Accountants, the Love Like Lija Foundation, and the North Settlers Landing Association, Julie enjoys reading, walking, crocheting, and keeping up with an active family.

Stephen H. Clark
Stephen H. Clark, CRC, (Certified Realtime Captioner) is the Manager of Home Team Captions, a Washington, DC based realtime captioning company. Steve began his career as a freelance court reporter in 1985. In 1997, Steve left court reporting to pursue a career in broadcast captioning. In 2006, after nine years in the broadcast captioning field, Steve started Home Team Captions (HTC). HTC provides onsite and remote CART captioning for individuals and large groups, in one-on-one settings as well as conferences; online webinars and seminars; civic settings, including live theater performances; and stadium captioning of sporting events. Steve also provides one-on-one remote training for realtime writers who are transitioning from court reporting to captioning, and for working broadcast captioners interested in captioning broadcast sports. Steve’s one-on-one training has been approved for continuing education units by the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA). In 2018, Steve began a three-year appointment as a Board Member on NCRA’s Board of Directors. Steve was President of the New Hampshire Court Reporters association from 1994-1996. He has presented at local, state, and national court reporting and captioning seminars since 1997, including presenting on three panels at NCRA’s 2017 National Convention and Expo.

Laurie Reinhardt
Laurie Reinhardt CSC, NIC-A is Alternative Communication Services’,Interpreter Coordinator. She works with our clients who desire convention (platform) and classroom sign language interpreting and handles all the details of providing such services. Laurie has built up a strong nation-wide network of interpreting agencies that share our corporate values. She holds multiple sign language interpreter certifications through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and has been active in the interpreting field for more than 30 years. Laurie received a BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology and a Master Degree from the University of Washington in Fine Arts. Laurie is a founding member of the Association of Visual Language Interpreters in Canada as well as a founding member and co-owner of SignOn, Inc. from 1997-2011.

Zack Means
Zack Means, Client Services Specialist – Lead, graduated from the TypeWell Training Program in 2006 and first joined Alternative Communications Services in 2007 as a TypeWell transcriber. For nine years, serving the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community had been a deeply rewarding career which led to his transition in to the Operations Department in 2016. When he’s not busy at work answering emails, Zack is usually out honing his photography skills, exploring new hiking trails, or people watching at the coffee house.

Clare Cawley
Clare Cawley is a Client Service Specialist for Alternative Communication Services. She holds a degree in Court and Realtime Reporting from Alfred State College and put those skills to use as a transcriptionist for several years. Before learning stenography, Clare received a degree in Pastry and Baking Arts and has worked in cake shops in three different states, creating beautiful edible treats as well as developing diverse customer service skills. In her free time, Clare likes to spend time with her two dogs, Piper and Jax, try out new crafting projects, exercise, and spend time with her family and friends.

Rachelle Hayes
Rachelle Hayes, Bookkeeper, joined Alternative Communication Services in August 2016. Rachelle brings her bookkeeping experience from the Summit Agency of Nashville where she was also responsible for customer relations and ad design for both the Nashville, TN and Athens, GA markets. She has a degree in Mass Communications from Middle Tennessee State University and still calls Middle Tennessee home. She enjoys reading, traveling (especially to the beach), and spending special time with her daughter, family and friends.

April Prater
April Prater joins Alternative Communication Services working in Client Support Services with Home Team Captions. She worked as a C-Print captionist for 14 years providing realtime services for many organizations and in a variety of settings. April has a heart for training and has eight years of experience presenting at national and regional conferences and teaching onsite workshops and online classes for professionals serving the Deaf/hard-of-hearing population.

Krista Cywanowicz
Krista Cywanowicz is the Client Service Specialist for ACS-ITS, an Alternative Communication Services company. She began volunteering with the Deaf community and taking ASL classes at the age of 15. Krista received her C-Print Certification from NTID in 2007, and graduated at the top of her class with her degree in American Sign Language Interpreting in 2009. She has worked as an interpreter in both community and educational settings, as well as tactile interpreting for the DeafBlind community. Her extensive experience and extreme passion for this industry transcend into her role with The Caption Family. Krista is a Cincinnati native and the ultimate sports fan (Go Bengals, Reds, and Seminoles!) She also enjoys working out, playing softball, cooking, traveling, and spending time with her family and dog.

Zoe Hyssong
Zoe Hyssong serves as Social Media Intern for ACS. As a high school student, Zoe knows her way around social media and has decided to put her skills to good use. She assists with the ACS Twitter and Facebook postings. Zoe enjoys managing various sports teams at Glenbard East High School (GEHS). Life goals seem to be focused around health sciences and the entertainment industry. There seems to be no aspirations of taking over for her dad – yet.

Jeff Andrews
Jeff Andrews is a Sales and Marketing Executive for Alternative Communication Services with over 7 years of industry experience. He has spent the past 2 years providing clients across the U.S. and Canada with accessibility solutions. He holds a BA from Worcester State University, and currently resides outside of Boulder, Colorado. Jeff works with ACS clients in a consultative approach to ensure that the highest levels of services are  provided, while recognizing that each client has a unique set of needs to be met. Jeff likes to take full advantage of living in Colorado with lots of hiking, skiing, mountain biking and tennis.

Larry Driver currently serves as a captioner and consultant to Closed Caption Productions (CCP), an Alternative Communication Services (ACS) brand.  He began his career as a freelance court reporter in 1977, and formed CCP in the late ‘80s, becoming one of the earliest firms providing captioning in the entire U.S.  In 2015, CCP joined the ACS family of companies. Larry holds both the RDR and CRC certifications from NCRA. He is also a private pilot and an avid builder of experimental aircraft. In addition to just “flying for fun,” he is active in the Civil Air Patrol as a Search & Rescue/Disaster Relief Mission Pilot, and also volunteers for his local county sheriff’s department.

Kara Dugas brings a decade of experience to her role as news captioner for EduCAPTION, an Alternative Communication Services (ACS) brand. Prior to joining ACS, Kara shared her skill as a Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) writer for several community colleges in Texas.  She loves the niche of news, and does that exclusively in her position with EduCAPTION.  Kara now resides in Las Vegas, where she enjoys salsa dancing and traveling. She is an active volunteer for USO in her spare time.

Emily Els serves as a Client Service Specialist for Alternative Communication Services. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Physiology, and has served in a number of student- and community-focused organizations. Raised in a family that has contributed to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities, Emily brings a people-oriented skill set and a drive to deliver the best to our clientele and the team. She is responsible for coordinating and scheduling jobs between clients and writers, hence ensuring a seamless flow of communication. Based out of Ohio, Emily is the trifecta of professional-artist-nerd. In her spare time, she enjoys teaching color guard, writing in calligraphy, and traveling abroad.

Donna Licari is a broadcast captioner for EduCAPTION, an Alternative Communication Services (ACS) brand, bringing over 25 years’ experience in court reporting and broadcast captioning combined.Donna holds a degree in Court and Conference Reporting, working the last 12 years as a broadcast captioner.Prior to captioning, Donna worked as a freelance court reporter, covering insurance cases all the way to Federal Court proceedings.Bringing all that experience to ACS, she performs her talent writing everything from classes to business meetings, and even your local news.Born and raised in Michigan, Donna has danced ballet for 36 years and counting.She also enjoys boating and spending time with her husband and her long-haired dachshund, affectionately known as sweet little Maisie.

Mike Rowell is a staff captioner from Placerville, California.  In addition to captioning, Mike is also a certified shorthand reporter in California, where he worked reporting depositions and court proceedings for the first six years of his career.  He joined the EduCAPTION, an Alternative Communication Services (ACS) brand, team in November 2015.  Outside of work, Mike enjoys playing bass and spending time with his wife and two sons.

Lenore Schatz CSR, RPR, RMR, CRC, is a highly-skilled real-time writer for EduCAPTION, an Alternative Communication Services (ACS) brand.  She graduated with an Associate in Applied Arts in Court Reporting degree from Green River Community College in Auburn, WA.  Lenore began her career in the legal field, doing depositions, environmental hearings, and other courtroom work.  In 2000, Lenore entered the world of closed captioning, and has never looked back.  Lenore currently lives in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, with her husband and two kids.  She enjoys spending her free time hiking, running with her dogs, participating in charity half marathons, yoga, quilting and reading Spanish novellas.

Bethany Morse is a Client Service Specialist for Alternative Communication Services. She has been a TypeWell transcriber since 2012 and loves helping to provide communication access to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. Bethany has a diverse background, including holding degrees in Oboe Performance (Bachelor of Music) and Architectural History (Master of Arts). She has lived in five different US states and two foreign countries, and she is extremely passionate about traveling. In her spare time, Bethany enjoys hiking, rock climbing, standup paddle boarding, photography, watching movies, and playing with her golden doodle, Margeaux.

Anthony Trujillo is growing into the next phase of his career as a captioner with Home Team Captions, an Alternative Communication Services (ACS) brand, having worked as a courtroom and deposition reporter since 2010.Following a nonconventional career path, Anthony draws on his skills in performance and business to apply them to the challenging and skilled craft of CART captioning.He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, in Theatre Arts and Business Administration, earned in 2003, continuing with a Master of Fine Arts in Acting and Performance, focusing on the development of new plays, from the Ohio State University.He earned his master’s degree in 2006, and is certified by the National Court Reporters Association, demonstrating command of his skills by scoring among the top ten stenographers in speed and accuracy competitions on a national level.

Josh Garrett, CI and CT, NIC, is the Manager for ACS Interpreting and Training Services, and serves as the Chief Interpreting Officer for Alternative Communication Services. He was formerly the CEO of JG Interpreting & Training Services (JGITS), and works as the Staff Interpreter/Interpreter Coordinator for the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.He has been interpreting professionally for more than 20 years.He taught within the Interpreter Training Program at Goshen College as well as for Purdue University.Josh works as an interpreter educator, trainer, mentor, consultant and advocate for Deaf children. Josh served as an evaluator for a state screening program. He has experience interpreting in a variety of settings including religious, VRS, VRI, platform, freelance, medical, and educational. Josh has conference interpreting and/or presenting experience at the local, state, regional, national, and international levels.

Kathy Barkhimer brings over 13 years of experience to her role as Accounting Assistant for Alternative Communication Services. After majoring in Accounting at DeSales University, she has worked in the field of accounting for a variety of industries ranging from insurance to construction. Kathy made a brief segue into healthcare by becoming certified and working as a nurse aide for a couple of years before returning to her roots in accounting. She and her husband have a heart for adopting senior-aged dogs and at least two dogs can be found in their home at any given time. In addition to spending time with her husband and dogs, Kathy is an avid moviegoer and enjoys singing and musical theater.

Jill Rausch serves as the Client Service Specialist for both Closed Caption Productions and PostCAP LLC, both affiliates of Alternative Communication Services.Following careers as a musician, orchestra teacher, and vocational-technical assessment counselor, Jill trained in stenography at the Denver Academy of Court Reporting and has worked as a transcriptionist and offline captioner since 2010.Jill enjoys caring for her young-at-heart Maltese, Charley; playing with words; cracking herself up; and exploring the city of Phoenix with her husband. She was a “Jeopardy!” champion in 2017.

Clare Cawley is a Client Service Specialist for Alternative Communication Services. She holds a degree in Court and Realtime Reporting from Alfred State College and put those skills to use as a transcriptionist for several years. Before learning stenography, Clare received a degree in Pastry and Baking Arts and has worked in cake shops in three different states, creating beautiful edible treats as well as developing diverse customer service skills. In her free time, Clare likes to travel, volunteer with rescued farm animals, find new vegan foods to try, exercise, and spend time with her family and friends.
